Picture Book Volunteer 留学生の絵本お話し会

Cultural exchange
Since 2015, We have been hosting a Picture Book Volunteer with ICU exchange students for local families. Volunteers and exchange students work together to plan, practice, and read picture books in different languages. Children also engage in small games and songs from all over the world. After the event, exchange students freely interact with local families. The exchange students aren’t “foreigners” here; they become “older brothers and sisters” for the children.
毎月１回、国立天文台内にある「三鷹市星と森と絵本の家」で地域の親子向けに絵本のお話し会を開催しています。留学生と一緒に内容や読み方を相談し、日英語やそれ以外の言語での読みきかせ、各国の歌や手遊びを子ども達と楽しんでいます。お話し会後のフリータイムは留学生と地域の親子が自由に話し、遊ぶ時間。子ども達にとっても留学生は「外国人」ではなく「遊んでくれるお姉さん、お兄さん」になっています。
Home Visit Program ホームビジットプログラム

Since 2016, We have been hosting Home Visit Program where ICU exchange students visit homes of the local community. Host families are often acquaintances of coordinators, participants of our events or ICU alumnis. Home visiting helps local families to connect with exchange students from abroad. Working together with the ICU festival committee, we also provide information for exchange students to invite local families to the ICU festival.
２０１６年から概ね年２回程度、ICU留学生が地域のご家庭に遊びに行く「ホームビジットプログラム」を開催しています。ホストファミリーは、コーディネーターの友人・知人、イベント参加者、近隣の子育て世代が中心です。ビジットの日程や内容は当事者同士でフレキシブルに調整し、ホームビジットを入口に、地域の家族と留学生がつながるきっかけづくりとなっています。２０１９年からはICU祭実行委員会とも連携し、留学生が地域のご家庭を訪問する代わりに、留学生がICU祭に地域のご家庭をお呼びして案内をしています。
Glocal Farm Glocal畑

In the Glocal Farm project, exchange students work together with Japanese students using part of a farm at ICU. The specific work and variety of plantations differ depending on the season. There is also a “Mini Harvest festival” once a month for the members to interact. In the future, we plan to rent a small farm outside of ICU, and establish it as a community farm that lets people connect with one another.
２０１８年に学生有志による「畑プロジェクト」がスタートし、キャンパス内で農園がスタートしたため、その一部をお借りして、週１回程度、留学生と日本人学生一緒に畑作業を行っています。作業内容や植え付け作物は季節によります。また、これに加えて毎月１回、「畑プロジェクト」全体での交流のため「ミニ収穫祭」を開催しています。

The diverse backgrounds of international students allows them to have different experiences and perceptions on the world. Thus, the interaction between the kids and international students are crucial for kids to understand diversity at an early stage. We have many programs that allow for the interaction between children and international students. In the past, we have visited elementary schools to help bring awareness regarding diversity and multiculturalism. Additionally, international students and children work together to make a community garden. On top of that, we also hold workshops for adults such as dance workshops, coffee workshops, and peace workshops.
多様なバックグラウンドを持つ留学生のみなさんの経験や知識、技能を活かして、地域の子ども達などに遊びや学びの機会を提供するアウトリーチ活動を行っています。小学校訪問では、異文化理解のための授業や工作、外遊びをしています。他にも、コミュニティガーデンでの花壇づくりを実施しています。コミュニティガーデン花壇づくりは、子どもと留学生で遊ぶ時間も多い上、花壇づくりも楽しめるので大人気です。その他に多様なバックグラウンドを持つ留学生の技能や経験を活かした大人向けのワークショップも開催しています。

Rural area in japan has a lot of charms which you can't experience in Tokyo. Since 2022, we are visiting beautiful fishing village, Manazuru, Kanagawa Pref, and since 2024, Akigawa Valley, regularly.
In the local community, we can learn about their rich community and the back ground of its charm also enjoy volunteer activities, together with locals.
日本の地方には東京では体験できない魅力や豊かなコミュニティがあります。これらの地域を訪問して、現地でボランティア活動を行い、日本についての理解を深めながら地域貢献を行う地方創生プロジェクトを行っています。２０２２年から神奈川県の真鶴町へ、２０２４年から秋川渓谷に定期的に訪問しています。

In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic’s dominance deprived the interaction between people, we decided to plan online events as well. This allowed us to connect with people all around the world. One of the most popular programs is the “online field trip” in which international students take kids on a tour of their own country. We also hold workshops that discuss environmental issues and peace research.
2020年に世界中に大きな影響を与えた新型コロナウイルスをきっかけに、地域の子ども達向けに各種のオンラインプログラムを始めました。主な内容は、留学生と楽しむ「オンライン遠足」、留学生と学ぶ「ワークショップ（環境、平和など）」です。
